Wind Down with Friday Night Manhattans
- On March 2, 2017
I got the idea for “Friday Night Manhattans” for Bottle Rocket from my friends Katie & Kyle Cannon. The ritual is simple and repeatable; on Friday evenings at home, Katie and Kyle downshift from the week, and make the “nice” manhattans. They use the “good” whiskey, they open the fresh bottle of vermouth, and they use their favorite glasses, and savor the cocktail and the resulting conversation, rushing toward nothing other than relaxation.
What has always struck me about this simple yet impactful ritual is it’s accessibility, and how it brings them together. No travel is required, no bags to pack nor outfits to choose, all that is required is a prioritization of time. It’s that intention, the making time where time could easily slip away, that is key here. With the demands a young daughter, work, travel, and family commitments, Friday Night Manhattans are a way to connect and have a conversation after the successful navigation of another week. That mindful and intentional gathering for the purpose of conversation and togetherness with friends, neighbors and loved ones is what we are striving for with Friday Night Manhattans at Bottle Rocket, and here is how we make them;
For One Manhattan;
- 2.5oz Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey
- .75oz House Vermouth*
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Chill a coupe glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes (alternatively, fill the glass with ice and add splash of water to chill). Stir cocktail ingredients over ice to desired dilution. Strain into the chilled coup, garnish with an orange twist, expressed and discarded, and one brandied cherry.
*Our House Vermouth is a 50/50 blend of Punt e Mes and Dolin Sweet Vermouth.
